W.R.I.T.E. Club and Hearts in Harmony discussed Romantic literature and art, including classic Romantic novels like Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre” at their joint meeting on Sept. 18 in Room 1706.
Around 10 members of both clubs learned about aspects of Romantic literature — from its folk and medieval culture origins to common themes on imagination and individuality. Members then engaged in a discussion and quick-write activity on famous artworks of the Romantic period.
“I heard the presidents of both clubs talk about the Romantic era and what romanticism really means in books and novels,” senior and W.R.I.T.E. Club member Richard Manne said. “Romanticism isn’t all lovey-dovey or about romance; it means different things. It's about the human experience and what it has to offer.”
Senior and W.R.I.T.E. Club president David Fang partnered with Hearts in Harmony to achieve their shared mission of spreading “love” for literature throughout the Bellaire community.
“Since Hearts in Harmony is a club focused on the Romantic movement, we felt that it would be the perfect opportunity to put our own spin on the idea and explore the genre through a literary lens,” Fang said.
This year, W.R.I.T.E. Club hopes to promote literacy and increase community involvement in both the school setting and broader Houston area.
“We hope to organize and participate in more community service events,” Fang said. “We’re planning to collaborate with more clubs and organize more author chats. We’ve also begun hosting monthly SAT Reading and Writing prep sessions, which we hope will help juniors and underclassmen feel more prepared for the stress of standardized exams and the college application season.”
Hearts in Harmony was founded during the spring semester of the last school year. Inspired by Romanticism, the club aims to explore the depth of human emotion and how that shapes storytelling and artistic expression.
“We thought it'd be a really cool idea to combine the two [clubs], especially since we're a bit of a newer club and W.R.I.T.E. Club is pretty well established,” Hearts in Harmony secretary and junior Cindy Tint said.
This year, Hearts in Harmony plans to recruit more members by hosting new events and collaborating with more clubs like Poetry and Philosophy Club. In February, the club plans on delivering love notes to people in honor of Valentine’s Day.
