Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Club sold boba as a fundraiser in Room 2717 on Sept. 19. The boba sale had a large turnout, with the initial line containing over 30 people. They sold four flavors.
The club raised money for tickets to the Breakthrough T1D Houston Promise Ball. Ticket sales benefit Breakthrough T1D, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Freshman and club member Chinenye Nwokolo said the hallway was chaotic. Nwokolo organized buyers for the fundraiser.
“I was in shock [with the turnout],” Nwokolo said. “I was one of the people trying to get people against the wall so they wouldn’t take up the entire hallway. [The students] really didn’t want to listen to me.”
Freshman and club member Elena Olinsky was unable to arrive before Cardinal Hour began. Olinsky said she had to force her way into the room to start working.
“We kind of had to shove through the line,” Olinsky said. “We were like ‘No, no, we’re part of the club!’ We got in and I just started going back and forth, running orders.”
Club president, founder, and sophomore Zoe Novak said members were able to organize themselves into stations without specific instructions. Club treasurer and junior Sierra Little took payments in the front of the room while club members took orders, made drinks, and ran them to waiting buyers standing against the wall of the classroom.
“In the beginning, I was very stressed out, especially because everyone was kind of just standing, staring at us,” Olinsky said. “Once more people got here and were helping, it was fun because we were more efficient.”
Novak said she had planned extensively beforehand, but customers still emptied multiple cartons of tea and used all of the club’s tapioca.
“We had seven gallons of tea and maybe two gallons of tapioca,” Novak said. “I did a lot of calculations before even submitting the inquiry. The goal was to sell about 100, so I think we definitely got at least that.”
“This was our first big fundraiser since we couldn’t really do these types of things last year.” Novak said. “We worked really hard on it. I think I’m a lot more prepared for next time.”
