Astronomy Club explored the universe on a smaller scale, where members learned about galaxies and built their own models using art supplies on Oct. 8 in Room 1601.
Club president and senior Sara Kannan led a presentation covering topics such as the Milky Way’s spiral arms, dark matter and galactic evolution. The meeting’s focus came from Kannan’s former research project.
“Galaxies are one of my favorite concepts in astronomy,” Kannan said. “Even in astronomy class, we’re taught that the Milky Way is just a spiral, but there are so many more gestures — and so many questions we still need to ask.”
Members expressed their creativity through science by constructing their own galaxy models. For senior Morgan Cremer, the activity encouraged her to come to more meetings.
“I learned about tidal tails,” Cremer said. “They’re sometimes called mice, which stood out to me because I have mice as pets. Building my own model made me more encouraged to come back.”
Astronomy Club plans to host a star party in January and meets every other Wednesday during Cardinal Hour. To learn more about the club, follow its Remind @bhs-stars.
