Hell or High Water Review

With the Oscars award ceremony at a close, many movies both known and unknown received awards, giving movie goers a long list of movies to put on their “watch list.”While many of the movies nominated were deserving of awards and recognition, there were other movies that went unawarded and unrecognized at the Oscars, namely, Hell or High Water.

Featuring famous actors such as Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges and Ben Foster, Hell or High Water was about two poverty stricken brothers, Chris Pine and Ben Foster, which went on a bank robbing spree through Texas to save their family farm from foreclosure and end the vicious cycle of poverty that their family faced for many generations. Chris Pine played the responsible, logical brother of the pair, while Ben Forster played an insane, bloodthirsty maniac that derived pleasure from robbing banks. These bank robbers were being hunted by the local sheriff, Jeff Bridges, who played an old wise cop who was near retirement, and his rookie partner Gil Birmingham.  With the nonstop action packed scenes, and beautiful shots and panoramas of the vast Texas plains, Hell or High Water, was sure to keep you engaged throughout the entire duration of the movie.

While the movie was widely thought of as one of the best movies of 2017 by critics, it is evident that the Oscar judges believed otherwise. Hell or High Water was nominated for several major awards such as, “Best Picture”, “Best Supporting Actor”, “Best Original Screen Play” and “Best Film Editing,” and received none of these.  With the beautiful cinematography of the Texas Landscape, suspenseful action and drama, and a powerful underlying message, Hell or High Water is truly a movie that you should not keep off of your list of “movies to watch.”
