La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica accepts new members with induction ceremony

High Honors: Spanish National Honor Society poses for a picture after accepting their role as honor students.

La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, the Spanish National Honor Society, had its induction ceremony on February 19th at 4:30 in the Science Conference Center. The newest additions to the Society were greeted with an explanation of what they were going to do in the years to come – in Spanish, of course.

In order to get into the Spanish National Honor Society, students had to fill out an application and write responses to questions about how they would actively participate if they got into the Society. Participants needed to have at least two years of Spanish language classes at Bellaire. 27 sophomores, juniors and seniors were accepted into the Society this year.

After the introduction to the Spanish National Honor Society’s purpose (to help Spanish-speaking communities and teach students Spanish and English,) audience members were asked to recite the Society’s oath. The students were called up on stage one by one and handed certificates showing that they were indeed new members. The students then enjoyed food and refreshments with their parents and peers.

The induction was a great place for students to socialize with the people that they would be working with for the next year. They also got to meet the club’s current officers and participants. PreIB Spanish 3, IB Spanish 4 teacher and host of the Spanish National Honor Society Margery Laufe helped put the event together and prepared her students for being a part of the organization. Sophomore Jakin Cordova, one of Laufe’s PreIB Spanish 3 students as well as a recently accepted member of the Spanish National Honor Society, commented on the induction ceremony.

“The Spanish National Honor Society induction was really short and sweet,” Cordova said. “The officers explained different aspects of the club in both English and Spanish, which I thought was pretty cool. We then got our certificates and took a group picture. It was a fun event and so far I’m glad that I joined the club.”

All members will attend a meeting at lunch in room 240 on Friday, March 11th.
