“I have been friends with [senior] Annie Tsang since elementary school. I think the first time I met her was during after-school pickup in second grade. Both of our moms would usually pick us up a little later than everyone else, so we were often some of the last kids left waiting outside. We would talk every now and then, but at the time, we were really just acquaintances.
Everything changed in fifth grade when we were finally put in the same class for the first time. We quickly became close friends and spent almost every day together at school. Even though we ended up going to different middle schools, we stayed in touch and made an effort to keep our friendship strong. By the time COVID-19 started, she had definitely become my best friend. During a time when it was easy to feel isolated, having someone like Annie made everything a little easier.
Over the years, she has become more like family than just a friend. We spend so much time together that our parents know each other really well. Whenever my family has some kind of event, my parents almost always ask if I want to invite Annie, too. One of my favorite memories was when my parents let me bring her to a family wedding in Florida this year. It was so special getting to share that experience with someone who has been such an important part of my life.
This year, we had two classes together, so I got to see her every single day. As exciting as the college application process was, one of the hardest parts was thinking about the possibility that we might end up at different schools after graduation. Luckily, everything worked out, and we’re both going to the University of Texas at Austin next year. I’m especially excited because she’s going to be my roommate.
At first, I was a little worried because people always say you shouldn’t room with your best friend. But after thinking about it, we realized that we already spend almost every day together and genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
Out of all the uncertainty that comes with starting college, knowing Annie will be there feels like carrying a piece of home with me. We would probably end up hanging out all the time in college anyway, so becoming roommates just felt natural. I’m so grateful that after all these years, we’ll get to start this next chapter of our lives together.”
