Go Texan Day Report
Friday, February 26th was the annual Go Texan Day. There were Chili Cook-offs, “Best Western Dressed”
contests, and chuck-wagon styled lunches all throughout the state to express the pride that Texans tend
to share. Go Texan Day is the day which Texans celebrate prior to the official Houston Livestock Show
and Rodeo kick off the following Saturday.
The holiday became officially recognized as the Friday before the Houston Rodeo Parade by Archer
Romero, the President of the Rodeo in 1954. To some it may just be a day for cowboy boots and
barbecue, but for others it means much more.
Senior Brandon Acuff described his past experiences with Go Texan Day and the sentimental value it has
for him and his family.
“Every year when I was a kid my family would dress up and go to a big barbecue with all of our friends,”
Acuff said. “We would always head to the parade downtown the next day, so Go Texan Day was like the
beginning of a really fun weekend. Everyone would dress up at my dad’s work and even this year we
went to the company barbecue and had a good time.”
So next year, the Friday before the rodeo kick-off parade, y’all get to barbecuing some good ol’ Texan
meat.
