[NEWS BRIEF] Guitar department hosts Spring Concert

Junior Caden Olbekson is a student in 5th Period Junior Varsity Ensemble taught by Mr. Moore. He played both the classic guitar and electric guitar that night.

The Intermediate and Advanced Guitar classes performed their Spring Concert yesterday. All five classes performed three pieces each, taught by the guitar faculty: Edward Grigassy, Sean Stone-Ashe and Mark Moore. The guitar program accepts donations that go to guest artists, guitar repairs, new strings, cables and accessories.

The master of ceremonies and senior Norma Callejas in 6th period varsity honors guitar orchestra said she was very proud of all her fellow guitarists and plans to pursue guitar in college.

“I plan to major in music for flute and guitar when I go to college,” Callejas said. “For my little guitarists who want to come play guitar in high school, have fun with it and don’t stress too much about it. You’re doing great.”

Junior Caden Olbekson in 5th period junior varsity ensemble said he enjoyed performing on stage with two different guitars.

“I played the classical guitar and electric guitar,” Olbekson said. “Every single class went by so fast but I enjoyed it. Guitar brings so much relief, anytime anything happens, you can always go to your guitar.”

Sophomore Tyler Adams and member of the new 6th period varsity honors guitar orchestra said he urges students to come join guitar. Adams, himself, said it is an interesting experience to balance his involvement in both music and sports.

“It’s a really great feeling performing, like a burst of exhilaration,” Adams said. “To some people it’s shocking because they wouldn’t expect a football player as a guitar player because fine arts performers and athletes usually pick one or the other; but I get that fine mix of both. We do have a lot of concerts year round so you have to put in one hundred percent, but it pays off in the end.”
