In a flurry of high kicks, moonwalks and laughs, Wellness Club hosted a dance party meeting on Nov. 18.
“It was our president, Sara Tilney’s idea [to have a dance party meeting],” co-vice president Allyson Nguyen said. “She really wanted to promote [the eMotion Dance Company].”
This meeting was the club’s first in two months.
“I think it’s been really difficult balancing school, college applications and the club, but [the officers] are finding a balance at the moment,” Nguyen said. “We decided we needed to really prioritize the club.”
Wellness Club’s return began with the club officers emphasizing the importance of the mind muscle connection. After a stretch session and group discussion on the importance of dance, the meeting ended with a dance battle between seniors Greg Burleigh and Andy Strebel.
“[The dance battle] was sensational,” junior Alex Tilney said. “Words can’t describe how awesome it was. It was one of those events where you had to be there. Their moves were really inspiring. Personally, I think that Greg Burleigh won, but [the dance battle] was just an awesome implementation into the meeting.”
Tilney, a Wellness Club co-vice president, prepared for the meeting by creating a slideshow that incorporated dancing videos.
“I stayed up till 12 implementing some awesome, funny videos [into the slideshow], working on the slides and helping out my dear sibling, Sara,” Tilney said. “I was really happy that I could have contributed the way I did.”
The meeting exceeded Tilney’s expectations.
“I don’t think I realized how well I was going to do with the slideshow,” Tilney said. “I think a lot of people had a lot of fun with it. It was really funny, and I’m definitely going to try and recreate it in the next slideshow presentations that I do for Wellness Club.”
Nguyen also believes the meeting was enjoyable.
“The dance party meeting was really fun,” Nguyen said. “I felt really well, both mentally and physically because we really got to express ourselves through dance, which is something I love to do.”
Wellness Club hopes to host more dance party meetings in the future in addition to a volunteer event with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership. Follow the club’s Instagram @bewellbhs for updates on the volunteer opportunity.
