The League of Women Voters of Houston (LWV) in partnership with the county clerk hosted voter registration and a voter education presentation in the auditorium on May 6. The registration was for the upcoming midterm election on Nov. 3.
Students can register to vote as soon as they are 17 years and 10 months old. According to LWV Programs Officer for Voter Services Dallana Camargo, LWV’s mission is to increase voter participation among young voters. Just 22% of Texans aged 18-29 voted in the last midterm election.
“Even if you don’t care about politics, government and politics is going to care about you,” Camargo said. “They decide everything that happens, from the way that potholes are being fixed in the streets to how your school is funded. Everything that you can think of is all through the government. So if you don’t participate, you don’t get a say in how that affects you.”
Voter registration must be completed 30 days prior to the election. To learn more about voter registration, visit the City of Houston Teen Voting Guide.
