A reflection on the events of Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey taught me very important lessons, I have learned how to be grateful. Because of the storm, l have learned how to control my boredom. Most importantly l have learned how to control my patience with people.

This storm has taught me how to be grateful. The whole process  showed me how blessed I am to have the people in my life that l do. When the storm was about to start, it was only me, my mother, and my grandmother in the house. We had family who wanted to let us stay with them but my mother didn’t want that because she though the storm was not a big deal. I thank God that we had family and people in our life calling her and telling her that we needed to get out. So finally, my uncle called and demanded that we over his house with our grandmother. My mother couldn’t say no.

When we arrived at my uncle’s house, everyone was watching the storm. We hoped his house wouldn’t flood, but we saw that the water was already rising in his house. We decide that we should go to a hotel. I am so grateful for  the fact we had this option. A lot of people didn’t have a chance to.

Now, getting into the hotel was a big problem because everyone wanted a room and it was first come first serve. The roads closed due to flooding and we only had one truck that was big enough to fit seven people and a huge dog. We had to be at the hotel soon because we needed to get 3 rooms and fast.. When we got there the lobby was filled with crying families getting rooms. We were one of the last families to arrive so getting a room was difficult. The biggest problem  was my uncle.  My uncle is a very difficult person when things don’t go this way. He was yelling and screaming at the staff to hurry and because of this we almost didn’t get a room.

When we got to the hotel the first day was the easiest. Then when day two and day three rolled around, l really started to get bored. You can’t do anything but just wish to go home and hope that everything is okay. You can’t run around the hotel because they want you to stay with your family. You can’t talk to other kids because everyone is staying in their rooms. You don’t get to order food to your rooms because all the staff is at home with their family.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 weeks. Every minute l wanted to go home. I wanted to sleep in my own bed. l wanted to walk around with freedom and not worry about someone telling me to go back into my room. I wanted to get any food l pleased without any one telling it run out. I just wanted to go home and not have a worry in the world to think about.

Even after everything we have been through because of the storm, l would not trade it for the world. This storm taught me a lot in a matter of a few days. This truly was an experience I will never forget.
