Varsity girls’ basketball lost to Yates High School on Nov. 7. This marked the start of their preseason, with four more games before district play begins.
The Lady Cards started the game trailing 17-9 by the end of the first quarter.
“I felt like the first half was pretty good,” sophomore Jenna Dorsey said. “We gave up in the second half. I just wanted to do my best and establish a good spot on the team.”
Dorsey is a shooting guard for the team, and she has played basketball since she was five. She joined the team halfway through her freshman year. Although she joined slightly late, she still feels like a part of the team.

“We’ve been practicing since summer,” Dorsey said. “Most of us practice in seventh period every day, and we just started after-school practice.”
With one minute and 30 seconds left in the second quarter, the score was tied at 23-23. However, Bellaire was able to pull ahead 25-23 going into halftime.

With three minutes and 40 seconds left in the third quarter, Yates came back to tie the score at 32-32. At the end of the third quarter, Yates pulled ahead 34-32.
“As a team, we’re pretty close, like a family,” senior Indiana Pak said. “We practice plays and presses as if it was against another team.”
Pak is a point guard, and has been on varsity since freshman year. Because she’s a senior, Pak is excited about getting to participate in senior activities like Senior Night.

“I like to win,” Pak said. “I think we should’ve won because Yates is a pretty beatable team. We were pretty unmotivated after the first half.”
The Lady Cardinals fell short with a final score of 64-39. The Cards will take on Brenham High School on Nov. 24 at noon at Bellaire.
“We’re going to do better next time,” Dorsey said. “This was just the beginning.”
