Dear Houston Texans,
I’m sorry.
Earlier this year, I made predictions that the Texans would finish their season at a mediocre 6-11, that their defense wouldn’t be able to overcome poor offense, and that Davis Mills was a terrible player.
Since then, the Texans have gone from a 2-3 record to 12-5, giving them the fifth seed in the playoffs where they advanced to the divisional round after demolishing the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 30-6 whooping.
It has been an incredible season, and the Texans have defied everyone’s (okay, my) expectations. Now, they’re two games away from the Super Bowl, close to thumping the prediction I was so confident in I made it my headline.
So what happened? When I made my original predictions, the Texans were uncoordinated, lacking points and most importantly, losing. In my mind, there was almost no shot at turning their season around, as only 6 teams in the Superbowl era had made the playoffs after an 0-3 start (the last team to do this being the 2018 Houston Texans).
But, the Texans found their coordination, found points, and became the best defense in the league, one that led the league in opponent yards allowed per game and was second in forced turnovers. Meanwhile, the offense was able to stay competitive and score points, with help from a 1,000 yard season from Nico Collins.
In other words, they got their act together and went on to go 10-2 from the week I did my predictions. Now, they’ve won the AFC Wild Card against the Pittsburgh Steelers, embarrassing Aaron Rodgers in potentially his final game ever, and giving Mike Tomlin his 7th consecutive playoff loss, leading him to step down from head coach.
The Texans have had an amazing season, and I jumped off the boat at the first sign of distress. It’s clear that they have had an incredible comeback, and it’s also clear that there are some apologies that I need to write.
