Restaurant Review: Taco Bell’s new breakfast menu has surprising flavors

Admittedly, I am not a huge expert on breakfast fast food. However, when I heard that Taco Bell was coming out with their own breakfast menu to rival that of McDonald’s, I was immediately interested. The breakfast menu lasts from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., which makes it a little difficult to buy for a school morning, but some contenders are definitely worth the try.

First, I had the sausage Waffle Taco. I was disappointed when I opened the box; the sausage was not neatly wrapped along the interior of the waffle, but instead sprinkled on the very top. This difference not only made the taco less appetizing, but also harder to eat since the sausage bits kept on falling out. The combination of fluffy eggs, cheese, and sausage was quite delicious. The waffle was sweet enough on its own, so I did not use the syrup. Even though I had to wipe my hands between almost every bite due to the grease from the waffle, this entrée is a lot of fun to eat.

I was the most excited for the sausage AM Crunchwrap and was definitely not disappointed. Inside the tortilla had the same eggs, cheese and sausage as the Waffle Taco, but cushioned with a crunchy and thin hashbrown layer and covered with a mildly spicy cream sauce. The combination was crazy good. This entrée was my favorite and I would definitely eat it again. I think the AM Crunchwrap is both innovative and pragmatic; I could imagine myself happily eating this in the car with little to no mess.

After devouring both the Waffle Taco and AM Crunchwrap, I was so full that I could only try one Cinnabon Delight. The inner frosting was warm and decadent, and the outer cinnamon roll was covered in sugary goodness. Although it was a nice change from all the salty foods I had earlier, this dessert item was very sweet. I could not imagine eating this on its own for breakfast, but rather as a treat to have with milk. Because of the sugary exterior, the Cinnabon Delights are also not ideal for an on the road meal.

The other breakfast items, such as the AM Grilled Taco, Hashbrown and Breakfast Burrito did not seem as unique as the menu items I tried. Overall, I think that McDonalds definitely has some competition. Taco Bell has proven to easily combine their trademark menu items with comfort breakfast foods. Hopefully they will decide to expand their breakfast menu to include more beverages and car-friendly items.
