Latin Revolution

Latin Revolution

Latin Revolution was a club with the purpose of educating about Latino culture through dance. Spanish teacher Lucy Aguilar had been the head sponsor of Latin Revolution since it started. However, due to pregnancy, she handed off this position to teacher Jacqueline Tellez.

Taking on the new responsibility of teaching a club could have been difficult for Tellez, however she felt prepared for the upcoming year.

“Last year I was actually doing some work with the sponsor,” Tellez said. “I was kind of like a co-sponsor so taking over for this year was not that much of a struggle for me because I got to work with Aguilar who was the main sponsor last year. I feel like I have a lot of support from other teachers as well as the officers. They have helped me a lot through the process.”

The role of club officers was very important, especially during transitions. Senior Latin Revolution President Jorge Jasso spoke of how he helped with the club.

“My goal for this year is to have a successful end of the year show and to continue being as organized as we are right now,” Jasso said. “It is our job as officers to make sure these goals are achieved.”

So what changed with the introduction of a new sponsor? Junior Rodriguez explained the changes she noticed.

“There is not very much of a difference,” Rodriguez said. “It is mostly just the teacher. However I do feel like people are being more responsible this year. They are coming to practices and are taking things a little bit more seriously.”

Jasso saw this increase in responsibility as well.

“Latin Revolution is more organized this year,” Jasso said. “Tellez is a little more strict as well so the other members get more serious about it. They do not play around as much as last year.”

Tellez expanded on what changed with her new position as head sponsor of the club.

“I think this year we are holding the students a little more accountable for the things that they do, not only in the club, but also in their classes as well,” Tellez said. “Also this year we are trying to branch out a little bit more so that we are not only performing for the school but we also perform in different spaces to get more exposure.”

Club members respected and admired the new teacher. They were excited to work with her throughout the year.

“The new teacher is pretty cool,” Jasso said. “She makes things more organized. Our first show was a success, it was really good. We have had no trouble. She is an amazing teacher.”

Even with the improvements that were made, Tellez still wanted to make more.

“So my plan for this year is to get the students to have more performance skills,” Tellez said. “I want them to learn how to work the stage and to learn how to perform in front of an audience. I want to teach them to use facial expressions so that way we can go ahead and do more performances out in the community because I want the group to not only be a club for our school but something that is strong within the Houston community.”

Tellez was very passionate about Latin Revolution and was excited to have the opportunity to lead the club.

“I chose to be a sponsor for Latin Revolution because I, myself, am very proud of my Latino culture,” Tellez said. “I think that it is very important for students to have an outlet to showcase their culture. There is a big Latino population in Houston overall. I think that for our community to be strong we need to celebrate and come together, so I think it is important to help out this group that is doing it right here on campus.”

Tellez was prepared for this upcoming year of culture and dance. Even as much as she helped the club she knew she could not succeed without the school’s help.

“Although not every student can be a member of Latin Revolution we do appreciate the support that we get from students when we perform,” Tellez said. “That is how we get new members and  support from other teachers so I just want to thank people for the support that they have given the group over the years because that is what continues to make this group popular and grow.”
