Seniors George Walters and Jillian Greene had no idea what they were getting themselves into
when they asked AP Government and Economics teacher Michael Clark about the Student Board of Directors for the Houston Branch of the Dallas Federal Reserve.

“My brother’s friend had the position four years ago, so he told me to pester Mr.Clark about it because his friend really enjoyed it when she did it,” Walters said.

The Student Board of Directors program allows two students from 12 high schools in HISD to learn about the roles and functions of the Federal
Reserve, gain exposure to the Federal Reserve and learn about the community while gaining leadership skills.

“I think it will be interesting to learn about the economy and the roles the Federal Reserve plays,” Walters said. “It’s really cool that Jillian and I get to
participate in this because there are only 13 Federal Reserve banks nationwide, and, fortunately, there is one in Dallas that has a Houston branch.”

The selected students serve a one-year term from October through March. They meet monthly at the Houston Federal Reserve Branch where they have guest speakers, presentations, roundtable discussions and educational exercises.

“We haven’t had our first meeting yet,” Walters said. “We’ve only been inaugurated, but I’m really excited for the program to get under way. I think this will be a unique experience that may help me in the future.”

The Student Board program is designed to provide exceptional opportunities for personal and professional growth as well as to explore real-world issues affecting the nation’s economy and financial system.
