German Students Excel at Houstonfest

The Bellaire German participated in Houstonfest on Feb. 1, an annual German competition designed to test what the German students have learned throughout the school year. The competitors participated in oral tests, theatre arts, puppet shows, and music shows. With the German culture surrounding them, the German Club students participated in a true German competition.

Junior J.D. Bobo spoke about the Houstonfest experience and what it was like competing at Houstonfest.

“It was a very competitive environment,” Bobo said. “We competed with students from all around the city and got a taste of true German culture. The judges were really strict in the competition because they wanted to really choose the best people to go to the state competition. There were a couple of other schools there with which we compete the most which pushed us to try and win as many competitions as possible.”

Not only did the students get a chance to compete with the best of the best at nationals, but they also received scholarship opportunities.

Freshman Emily Myers described the people she saw and the section she competed in.

“I competed in a theatre arts acting competition with one other student,” Meyers said. “We put on a play for the people there and also for the judges. There were lots of people there dressed in traditional German outfits which at times seemed a little weird to be honest. We were able to win most of the sections that we competed in, with three-fourths of the students that competed getting to state.”

The students that won at Houstonfest will participate in a state-wide German competition. German students and staff are excited for the upcoming competition and hope to bring home more trophies from the competition.
