On Feb. 8, 63 Russian students participated in the National Written Russian Contest and placed in the gold, silver and bronze categories. Six students, including Russian level three junior Jannah Wright, placed in the gold category. Because she was a level three speaker, Wright considered herself a fair Russian speaker and was not surprised by her results.

“The night before I wrote my introduction out and planned what I wanted to put in it, so when I took the test I knew what to do,” Wright said.

Wright gave credit of her love of Russian and skill at the language to Russian teacher, Lisa McLendon.

“[Mrs. McLendon] is a great teacher,” Wright said. “She made it very easy for us. She told us we would be judged on our introduction and that was the most important part.”

Additionally, 30 students from all six levels placed in the silver category, and 27 students from levels one through four placed in the bronze category. The five of the students who placed in the gold category were from level three and one was from level two.

The written exam tested the students’ ability to write a composition in Russian and is taken by Bellaire students every year.

Congrats to all of the winners!
