The Maple Street Journal and the Poetry Club met on Monday to promote their annual poetry slam. The poetry slam is a collaboration between W.R.I.T.E. Club, MSJ and Poetry Club and is scheduled for Jan. 31 during Cardinal Hour.
MSJ also promoted its slime fundraiser, which started Wednesday, Dec. 4. Students can purchase slime in room 3714 during Cardinal Hour until tomorrow.
Freshman Reginae Dugas learned about Poetry Club through the Bellaire website and Cardinal Camp. After watching a slam poetry performance on TikTok and joining the club, Dugas is considering participating in the poetry slam.
“I think it gives people a really deep understanding about current events,” Dugas said. “I like to see how much emphasis and power the poets have. It really speaks to me.”
According to Poetry Club co-vice president and senior Francesca Camerlo, the poetry slam typically yields a crowd of about 30 people. She hopes to get approval to hang posters to promote the event.
“In Poetry Club, we have a lot of opportunities to write, but we don’t often share,” Camerlo said. “Having a slam poetry meeting encourages people to participate and show off their work. [It] is kind of fun to see what people just keep in their journals.”
The three clubs will continue to plan for the poetry slam and send announcements through their Reminds: @msj25, @bellairepo and @bhswrite22.
