Ten students learned how to make DIY stress balls to manage stress during the Healthy Minds Club meeting in Room 2618 on Oct. 22.
President and sophomore Connor Chu demonstrated how to make a stress ball. He added around 4 tablespoons of cornstarch and water to a deflated balloon until it was halfway full, mixed it until there were no clumps, then tied it up.
“I came up [with the idea] to spread awareness of mental health,” Chu said. “We try to make things fun [and] interactive.”
For students like sophomore Elodie Tran-Cao, that approach makes her “more interested in learning about mental health.”
“The club introduces topics of mental health in a more fun and engaging way that helps everyone learn more,” Tran-Cao said. “Its a big and friendly environment, really hands-on.”
Studies such as the research of mental health and peer support show that discussing mental health with peers not only increases awareness, but also reduces isolation and builds resilience, which fosters a more connected and open environment for everyone.
Healthy Minds Club meets every Wednesday during Cardinal Hour and plans to continue offering interactive activities that promote emotional wellness. On November 18, the club will collaborate with the Medical Club to host a guest speaker event to share insights on mental health.
“The Healthy Minds Club made me look at mental health in a new way,” Tran-Cao said. “It made me want to work on my own [mental health] more.”
