University of Texas at Austin Subiendo Academy Senior Program Coordinator Kevin Vences visited Bellaire in Charlie’s Cottage to share information about the academy, the UT campus and scholarship opportunities offered through the program on Nov. 5.
The Subiendo Academy is a fully funded, five-day leadership and policy summer program offered through the McCombs School of Business at the UT Austin campus. It is open to all high school juniors in Texas, and the program covers room and board, meals, transportations and other expenses.
“If you’re interested in UT Austin, you’ll be able to familiarize yourself with campus and the program gives you a little introduction to what it would be like to live on campus away from your family for five days,” Vences said. “It’s a great opportunity to get accustomed to higher education.”
The academy allows students from the same region, such as students from the Houston area, to collaborate on addressing three major areas — education, health care, energy and the environment. Only 80 spots are available for the camp, but more than 750 applicants applied last year, making it “highly competitive,” according to Vences.
“We’re going to be bringing in guest speakers that teach you these financial skills,” Vences said. “At the end of the day, when you’re in college, who’s in charge of your finances? Yourself.”
To apply, students must submit two essays between 250-750 words, a letter of recommendation and a copy of their high school transcript. The application deadline is Jan. 31, 2026.
“Applying to this program is getting you into the habit of networking and talking to the people you need to talk to, to get the stuff you need,” Vences said. “It’s all about having a foundation of family.”
