Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) closed out the fall semester with a meeting consisting of worship and gingerbread house building in LGI 2 during Cardinal Hour on Dec. 19.
About 60 people attended and six groups participated in the competition.
Club presidents and seniors Megan Wang and Benaiah Trevino opened the meeting with weekly announcements and promoted the new club shirts that will go out to official club members in the spring semester.
After the announcements, FCA’s worship team started their performance with the song “10,000 Reasons” followed by “Abide” with attending members singing along.
“FCA is my favorite club,” freshman Matthew Davies said. “I come as often as I can, and every time is a blast. [My friends and I] wanted to participate in order to end this semester with some fun memories.”
The gingerbread house building competition started after worship’s commencement. Any interested participants formed into groups of six to 12 people and had 15 minutes to create the “best” gingerbread house. The winners would receive a shoutout on FCA’s Instagram and Remind. Davies participated in the gingerbread house competition along with a group of his five friends.

“A lot of the other houses looked bland and basic, but our [gingerbread house] is really fun and colorful, and I think that reflects [my team’s] dedication to having a good time,” Davies said. “We took a different approach than the traditional gingerbread house; our’s was constructed with a unique mindset and architectural plan, but I wouldn’t say we had a specific strategy. We honestly just wanted to go for the experience and make the most of our participation.”
Another participant, freshman Amelia Trevino, and her team “improvised” with the short time they were given to construct their house, finding outside inspiration for their work.
“We looked at the box and tried to follow the instructions, but [the box] said to let the house sit for 15 minutes, which we didn’t have time for, so we scrambled.” Amelia Trevino said. “A lot of the other houses were crumbling down, but ours had a firm foundation just like our firm foundation from God.”
Down to the last second, members of each group had fingers sticky with frosting and tables messy with sprinkles.

Out of six groups, House 2, a team consisting of sophomores Avery Zheng, Hailey Wong and Olivia Koo, were declared the winners of this year’s FCA gingerbread house building competition.

Zheng said that winning made her feel “accomplished” since she considers herself a competitive person. Like some of the other participating teams, Zheng and her group came up with an idea of what they were walking into and what they wanted to execute.
“My team decided that it would be easier to decorate the sides and roof of the house first so we could just put it together right after. If we decorated after assembling, the decorations would all be falling off.” Zheng said.
At the meeting’s conclusion, the club officers thanked everyone for their participation and attendants, bringing FCA’s weekly meetings of the first semester to a close full of fellowship.
