According to Michael Jackson, heaven can wait for the sake of love, but the Karaoke Club members couldn’t wait to put their voices to good use during their meeting in Room 2704 on Jan. 28.
“Karaoke is relatively important in my family,” junior Evelyn Tan said. “There's definitely less music in my house since my sister, Caitrin, left for college. Karaoke Club fills that gap for me, being able to sing with my friends or hear them show off their amazing voices that they've worked hard to train.”
The two singers performed harmonies in “Rewrite the Stars” from “The Greatest Showman” to start the meeting off before continuing with more modern classics.
“I think my favorite song at this meeting might’ve been ‘Vampire’ by Olivia Rodrigo,” Tan said. “Mostly because we really struggled on ‘Rewrite the Stars,’ which we’ve been attempting every now and then for the harmonies.”
This meeting was slightly different from many of the club’s others, as it took place during an oddly scheduled week due to testing. On the day of the club’s meeting, there was a block schedule occurring, where students had their fifth and third periods in the morning, followed by Cardinal Hour, and then by their sixth and seventh periods to close out the day.
“For this meeting, unfortunately, we did not have as much engagement as we did previously in our other meetings,” junior and Co-President Kamea Ta said. “I do think it's because that week had a testing schedule, so I understand that a lot of people were too busy or too tired to attend this meeting as they usually would.”
Unlike many of their meetings, this one did not have an overarching theme. Despite the songs being mostly centered on the idea of love, this was not their actual Valentine’s Day meeting on Feb. 11.
“Personally, I like themed meetings more since I feel like having a category makes it easier to think of more songs to play when there is a lack of requests,” Ta said. “With non-themed meetings, I feel that we often gravitate towards the same songs.”
Although this Karaoke Club meeting had to overcome some scheduling issues because of the modified testing schedule, they still managed to have an energetic and positive atmosphere as they ended the session with “From the Start” by Laufey.
