For sophomores Samantha (Sami) Percy and Isabella (Izzy) Percy, growing up together as fraternal twins and sharing a room leaves no choice but to get along.
“It’s different from having a close friend because you live with each other,” Sami Percy said. “So sometimes you hate each other, but it has always been nice to know I always have someone to talk to. If something crazy happens I can be like ‘Hey, this is crazy, right?’”
Though sharing a room comes with advantages, such as having accessibility to each other’s clothes and other perks, it doesn’t mean they share the same brain.
“You are two different people, so you have two different ways of organizing and two different ways of thinking,” Sami Percy said. “So the way that we operate is whenever one of us is cleaning for example, the other one just has to get out of their way.”
While both of them have their strengths, usually Sami Percy “brings the brains,” and Izzy Percy “brings the creativity,” which, according to the pair, is “ideal” when it comes to working on creating a graphic novel or group projects, but apparently these skills can be useless at times.
“The other day, I started folding the socks differently instead of balling them up,” Izzy Percy said. “I was really big on that, because we needed more space, and Sami got very annoyed with me. Eventually I was like whatever, I’m not gonna put that much effort into this.”
Izzy Percy describes Sami Percy and her to be exactly the same, but completely different at the same time.
“I know Sami will almost have the same thoughts as me,” Izzy Percy said. “But we’ll go about them in the complete opposite ways.”
Being twins as well as having two older brothers has helped them with collaborating with others.
“Living with someone so close, it changes you,” Izzy Percy said. “You argue differently with people, because your argument becomes less about being right and more about finding a solution.”
Sharing similar interests and extracurriculars strengthens their bond, whether it be complaining together or staying up until midnight talking about “random things.”
“Sami is someone I can just completely rely on, because we’re together all the time,” Izzy Percy said. “I feel like I’m definitely more confident because I’m less alone, and I know if I’m going through something, Sami is probably going through it, too. I feel like, in my experience, it’s almost like having an extension of myself.”
