It’s safe to say Disney princesses have had a chokehold on many, many childhoods. These princesses have been put on pedestals, meant to represent everything good in the world. But have we ever questioned if and why these princesses deserve our adoration? Have we ever thought critically about who they really are as people? Here’s our opinions on the 13 women who make up the iconic pantheon of princesses, from best to worst.
Belle – 9.7/10
She’s intelligent (reading is almost her whole personality), selfless (as proven when she sacrifices herself for her dad) and really does not believe in pretty privilege. Belle is one of the only relatable princesses, and her struggles as a character are universal to young women — dissatisfaction with the environment they’re stuck in, ambition for more and having to deal with annoying men. However, her judgment may have lapsed when she fully Stockholm syndrome-d by falling in love with her captor, but in her defense, we’d probably fall in love with anyone who gave us a library too. Also, it is worth mentioning that Beauty and the Beast is one of the few movies here that was written by a woman, which might be a reason why Belle is such a good character. Take notes Disney.
Jasmine – 9.5/10
Sass, style and strength — Jasmine has it all. Not to mention, her body’s so tea it makes the British want to colonize Agrabah. She’s also one of the few princesses to date down in terms of class lines, a concept ahead of her time. But, we think that her magic carpet ride may have gone to her head a little too fast. Trusting a random dude from the streets was a little naive of her, and she could have ended up in a very toxic relationship. But overall, from her tiger to her outfits, she exudes baddie energy.
Tiana 8.8/10
She will forever go down in history as the girl who kissed a frog. But if we overlook that minor lapse of judgement (because of germs), and when she broke girl code by getting with the prince despite her best friend’s interest in him, she’s a very solid princess. Tiana is the most girlboss of all the princesses, as she aspires to (and eventually) owns a restaurant. On top of that, she has an amazing sense of style. And of course, everyone loves beignets.
Rapunzel 8/10
Rapunzel turned out relatively normal for someone who got gaslit for 18 years straight. While she definitely gives homeschooled-kid vibes, she holds her own once she finally makes it to the real world. She can cook and fight with a frying pan, which we think is quite impressive. However, the fact that she thinks a frying pan makes a decent weapon is a little concerning. Rapunzel is naive and gullible, but considering her bizarre upbringing she managed to become a vivacious and tenacious princess. Also, she gets bonus points for having the patience to take care of her hair.
Mulan 7.6/10
Mulan’s filial piety is unrivaled. She’s like the cousin your parents always compare you to. While her love for her father is admirable, her judgement is a little questionable. Deciding to go to war in his place with absolutely no experience or upper body strength was not a great idea. She’s quite lucky they decided to train her, because if she got thrown straight into warfare, she would have died single and alone. Still, against all odds, Mulan pulled through and brought honor to us all.
Cinderella 7.5/10
It takes extreme levels of strength to be kind to people who treat you cruelly. Cinderella is truly the classic princess, and holds a special place in our hearts. She’s a role model for perseverance and hope, surviving when people around were actively praying on her downfall. However, we wouldn’t advise anyone to look to her for dating — or footwear — advice. It takes a special level of delusion to marry a man who you’ve only known for a night. Granted, the prince certainly matched her levels of crazy, chasing after a girl with her shoe.
Moana – 7/10
At some point, everyone struggles with fitting in, but Moana takes it to a whole new level. Even though Moana isn’t a princess, she’s the queen of finding herself, even if it takes sailing away from the only home she’s ever known. Moana’s love for her people is unrivaled (as seen when she goes on a whole quest to save her island), but other than that, her personality is kind of bland. The demi-god Maui is the interesting one, and Moana is just the classic heroine. It’s the people around her that make her engaging, not the other way around.
Raya – 6.7/10
Even though she’s one of the newer princesses, there’s a lot more to Raya than the girl with a dragon. She’s definitely one of the smartest Disney princesses out there, and proves herself over and over again throughout her quest to find the last dragon—but the girl has trust issues. Huge trust issues. She’s forever scarred by the loss of her father and the betrayal of her friend Namaari, a fact that follows her throughout the move. The fact that Raya came into being only four years ago is important, because her personality is generally unknown to most people. At the end of the day, Raya hasn’t yet captured the heart of all the 5-year-old girls out there.
Merida – 6.5/10
Merida truly lives up to the title of Brave. Turning your entire family into bears is a pretty courageous thing to do, even if it was by accident. We love her relationship to her little siblings, and she is the most iconic big sister. Merida was the first princess to not care about a prince, as all she cared about was her family, a commendable trait. However, her personality is very forgettable because her whole world was her family, and that doesn’t give her much depth. The only thing we truly recall about her is how red her hair was.
Pocahontas – 6/10
Pocahontas exudes a serene, nonchalant and composed aura. But for someone so cool, her choice of man is downright atrocious. While extremely historically inaccurate – John Smith and Pocahontus never had a relationship – at least in the actual movie, Pocahontas is an admirable character who advocates for peace. Stupid doesn’t even begin to describe what a terrible decision it is to fall for a man who is actively trying to steal from and eventually colonize your people.
Snow White – 5.6/10
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most gullible of them all?
It’s Snow White.
From not having the foresight to realize what a dangerous situation she was in to being dumb enough to take food from suspicious strangers, her survival instincts are nonexistent. But, she was clever enough to strike a deal to live with the dwarves, although her choice to trespass on someone’s house is a serious violation of xenia. Even though she’s a classic princess, her story (and personality) is a repeat of almost every other Disney movie and doesn’t bring anything new to the table.
Aurora 5.4/10
95% of Aurora’s life was sleeping. Out of all the princesses, she accomplished the least. It wasn’t her fault, but it also meant she had very minimal character development. While Aurora is truly blessed with beauty, grace and an amazing voice, her fairy godmothers failed to give her a complex personality. Also, marrying the random forest man who kissed you while you were asleep – even if it was to save you – is not a decision we support. However, we realize that it was a different time and Aurora might not have realized that getting kissed without consent is an issue.
Ariel 5/10
Above all, Ariel is stupid. Her decision to give up her voice (one of the most important parts of her life) for a guy is insanely dumb. Allowing herself to be tricked by the most nefarious person in the entire ocean is kind of sad. Sure, Ariel has pretty hair and her curiosity for the human world is very entertaining. But she is definitely the most spoiled princess out of them all, and needed her dad or sisters to do everything for her. She wanted more even though she literally had a hoard of treasure all to herself. At the end of the day, Ariel is the literal opposite of a strong independent woman, and that is why she is at the bottom of this list.
From Belle to Ariel, the personalities of Disney princesses range from complex and independent to idiotic and practically nonexistent. However stupid they may be, they will always hold a special place in our hearts — for nostalgic purposes, if nothing else.
